Professional Experience

As an Associate, then a Partner and now Senior Partner of Surridge & Beecheno, Mr. Rehman has extensively practiced in contentious and non-contentious matters of Multinational Companies in Commercial Laws such as Shipping, Admiralty, Aviation Banking, Corporate, Arbitration, Insurance, Alternate Dispute Resolution, Competition Commission, Oil, Gas & Energy etc. and dealing with their in-house counsel and attorneys, and has also conducted selected Family cases including Guardianship, inheritance, child custody, Rent and other Civil cases.

Mr. Rehman has advised and acted for a number of local and foreign clients with regards to employment and labour matters, including areas covering employment and labour law advisory, vetting and drafting employment contracts, advising on employment and labour disputes, payment of wages, minimum wage, gratuity, benefits, pensions and statutory benefits, representing clients in matters at all forums, including the National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC), Labour Court, High Courts etc.

He has acquired thorough experience of conducting arbitration proceedings before the highest judicial forums consisting of ex-Chief Justices of Pakistan and retired judges of Supreme Court and High Courts of Pakistan on behalf of multinational clients including the arbitration under ICC Rules before a foreign arbitrator. Furthermore, successfully made Rule of the Court awards outside Pakistan and enforced them in Pakistan. There are number of reported judgments of the Supreme Court and High Courts in this behalf.

He has also advised and represented a number of hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceuticals and medical device manufacturers / importers, in a number of matters in relation to drug registration, licensing, distribution agreements, labour matters, regulatory matters, IP, taxation and customs among others.

Mr. Rehman has advised a number of foreign and local clients on applicability of taxes (income tax, sales tax on goods, sales tax on services, CGT, etc.) and representing clients in their tax related disputes with federal and provincial tax authorities.

He has also extensively advised in Oil, Gas & Energy, Telecommunication matters to foreign law firms acting on behalf of multinational clients concerning the Rental Power Projects, HUBCO, Telecommunication towers, frequency bands and regulatory requirement of telecommunication including telecommunication giants Microsoft and CISCO on service-related issues and video conferencing etc.

Mr. Rehman also advised on matters of arbitration proceedings before International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Successfully resolved a multimillion-dollar dispute in favour of a Pakistani client through pre-arbitration proceedings/ADR with the team of counsel of a leading Petro Chemical Company in a European country.

He has acquired extensive experience in conducting litigation and non-litigation cases on agency and distribution ship and have acted amongst other for Otis elevators, British Airways, KLM, Johnson and Johnson, Kraft Foods and Air France etc and is country expert for Pakistan at International Distribution Institute (IDI) having over 70 country experts on worldwide level, and have remained on the board of American Life and thereafter known as MetLife Insurance Company for about two decades conducting and advising on all its legal matters including Courts, Insurance Tribunal, Insurance Ombudsman and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

Mr. Rehman has conducted a number of landmark cases in the field of aviation. He has represented Air France, KLM, British Airways, Etihad, flydubai, Turkish Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Pan Am, PIA, Thai Airways, Kenya Airways, Singapore Airlines, Malayia Airlines, Aeroflot, Gulf Air, Air Arabia, Saudi Arabian Airlines and many others. He has also conducted a large number of shipping, admiralty and maritime cases on behalf of ship owners, charterers, operators and local ship agents and has to his credit a number of landmark cases which have shaped the law.
